Everything businesses ask us before going solar — and the documents to take back to the boardroom.
01Solar Basics
Why Invest in a Solar Power Plant?
Solar is clean, renewable energy, and India enjoys around 300 days of clear sunshine a year. A solar plant fixes a large share of your energy cost — insulating you from tariff increases — and modules carry a 25-year output warranty. It produces clean, quiet electricity for decades and adds value to your factory or building.
What Are the Different Types of Solar Power Systems?
Grid-tied systems work alongside the utility grid: solar is the primary source and the grid supplies power at night or on cloudy days. Off-grid systems use battery or DG backup and run independently of the grid. Hybrid systems combine solar with battery storage — like WATTBANK — to keep clean power flowing after sunset.
How Does a Grid-Tied System Work?
A solar array — tens to hundreds of kilowatts of panels, typically on unused roof space — generates DC power. An inverter converts it to AC synchronised with utility power and feeds your distribution panel. Solar gets priority; the grid tops up whatever solar can’t cover.
What Happens to a Grid-Tied System During a Blackout?
The inverter shuts itself off within milliseconds of a grid outage to prevent dangerous back-feeding into the grid. So a grid-tied system alone won’t power your facility during a blackout — for that, you need battery storage.
What Should Be Considered Before Installing a Rooftop Plant?
Location (how much sunlight falls on the site), orientation (south-facing is best, though east–west can work well), panel efficiency (critical where roof space is limited), ambient temperature (heat reduces output — in hot regions a cooler month can outperform peak summer), plus roof structure and shading. Our design team models all of these before proposing a system.
02Economics & Finance
How Much Could I Save With Solar?
It depends on your roof area, tariff and consumption. As a planning rule, 1 kWp needs about 100 sq ft of roof and generates roughly 1,387 kWh a year. Try the solar calculator for an instant estimate, then ask us to validate it against your actual bills.
Should I Buy (CAPEX), Sign a PPA (OPEX) or Lease?
CAPEX gives the lowest lifetime cost and full ownership. OPEX (a long-term PPA) needs zero upfront investment — you simply buy power below grid rates. An operating lease gives a fixed monthly cost, independent of generation, with a third-party financier owning the plant. We model all three against your balance sheet.
Is the Solar Calculator a Quotation?
No. It’s a preliminary estimate using standard planning assumptions. Site geometry, shading, structural capacity, electrical integration and tariff structure must be assessed before a proposal or investment decision.
03Operations & Maintenance
Is Any Maintenance Involved?
Very little. Electronic components are largely maintenance-free; regular panel cleaning keeps output at its best. Our asset-management team handles preventive and corrective maintenance, module cleaning with soft water, inverter monitoring and breakdown response.
How Do I Know What My System Is Producing?
Every plant can be monitored 24×7 on Kalpa’s in-house O&M platform, with real-time health checks, instant alerts to our team and customisable performance reports for you.
Can I Upgrade the System If My Energy Needs Grow?
Yes. Additional panels can be added later, though you may need a larger inverter. Alternatively, we can size the inverter for future expansion at the outset.
How Long Will a Solar Power System Last?
A rooftop plant is designed for a 25-year life, and modules carry a 25-year output warranty. Inverters — the most sensitive components — typically last 10–15 years.
04Open Access & Storage
What Is Open-Access Solar, and Is It Right for Me?
Open access lets you buy solar power generated at an off-site park, wheeled to your facility through the state grid. It’s ideal for facilities with high energy needs and limited roof space. Kalpa develops and supplies from its own open-access parks across Maharashtra.
What Is WATTBANK?
India’s first productized Battery Energy Storage Service — a fully managed solution covering energy audit, right-sized storage design, implementation, 24×7 monitoring and lifecycle management. Built for commercial buildings with 500 kW – 1 MW connected load, it can cut peak-hour energy costs by 15–20% a year.
